I'm writing this about 20 minutes after finding out that the cat has died.
We all knew that this was coming soon, she was old and deaf and we think she was going blind.
I'm not really a cat person, I've always preferred dogs but Moosbach has always just been there. The strange name is because she was named after a character from a Loriot sketch.
Getting her is one of my earliest memories, we got her as a kitten from on of my mum's friends over 21 years ago. She was a Devon rex cross moggie with a grey coat with black stripes on it.
One of her favourite past-times was annoying me. It wasn't that I was scared of her, I just didn't like her sitting on me, something that she tried to do often. She finally did succeed a couple of weeks ago though so her life wasn't a total waste.
She did find a use for my cupboard though. She loved sleeping in there as my room was typically quiet enough for her to take one of the 8 or 9 naps needed to get enough energy for her main snooze. She did find, however, that my bed wasn't the best place to sleep on, until she would inevitably forget and then sleep on my bed. I was woken up a few times by a cat pawing at my feet because I moved and knocked her.
And now she's gone.
It will be strange being cat-less. I guess it's because she was just there, one of those constants that will be around forever.

Mr. Squiggle Dies
Norman Hetherington, the man behind Mr. Squiggle died yesterday aged 89. Mr. Squiggle was Australia's longest running children's show.
I loved watching that show as a kid. For those who don't know Mr. Squiggle was the man from the moon, who came and visited us in his pet rocket named Rocket and would draw these pictures from canvasses with squiggles and lines and dots. When he finished it was up to Rebecca, who was basically the token human, to orientate the picture correctly so we knew what it was.
As to the title, Norman Hetherington was Mr. Squiggle. As well as creating the show he drew the pictures and gave Mr. Squiggle his voice. To pretty much every Australian who watched the show as kids he was Mr. Squiggle.

RIP Norman Borlaug
He is, beyond all doubt, the greatest man who ever lived. Through his work in agricultural research he helped to improve the lives of billions by ensuring that enough food could be grown for them.
He died today at age 95.
His life was spent creating strains of plants that were high yield and disease resistant. He helped countries like Mexico, India and Pakistan become self-sufficient in their production of wheat, and did similar work with rice and other cereal crops. In doing so he prevented hundreds of millions of people from starving.
His work helped to make the world a better place, and we should remember him, and also try to make the world a better place as well.
He died today at age 95.

A Snapshot Of The Mind
A person who until recently I had never heard of died.
His name was Jeffrey S. Medkeff. By the sounds of it he died from cancer.
He was the Blue Collar Scientist.
I will start by saying Rest in Peace.
However, I really want to talk about something that I felt.
It's a rather strange feeling reading posts by him on his blog. It's like looking at a photo of someone's mind. A mind that was living only few days ago.
That even after his passing, his thoughts remain on the internet intact, to float around forever, for anyone who wants to know what his thoughts on certain topics were to see them.

Another Australian Dead
Ok, I'm going to make my point clear outright. I am against Australia going to war in Afghanistan, and I was against sending troops into Iraq, but, like most Australians, and hearing what happened to the Australian troops after coming home from Vietnam, I have always supported the Australians, and to some extent the US troops in this.
We have 1100 troops in Oruzgan province.
SAS Signaller Sean McCarthy was killed yesterday after succumbing to wounds from an IED.
I don't know if this will work for non-Australians, but this interactive display can tell you more about the Australians in Afghanistan.
McCarthy is the sixth soldier to have died in Afghanistan.

It Makes You Wonder...
A 29 year old mentally disabled woman was tortured to death.
She was pregnant.
Her captors beat and abused her and they stole her money. The woman, Dorothy Dixon, faced this abuse from several captors, including a 12 year old boy, and the daughter of the woman who abused her the most, who was 15.
My own opinion at this time is that I wish that the captors could face the same treatment as they treated this poor woman, who has left behind a 1 year old boy.
Unfortunately that cannot happen because it is an abuse of the human rights of these sub human people.
Right now is Easter, the most important time in the whole of Christianity.
It is when Jesus died for our sins on the cross.
For those who know anything about me it is that I am agnostic, so this religious bent is perfectly fine for me.
At this time I really wonder if Jesus died for everyone's sins, including people like Michelle Riley.
In a way it saddens me to think that Jesus probably did.
He forgave people who sinned and helped those who needed to be helped. Unfortunately there is nothing there that talks about him forgiving a sadistic murderer.
I really wonder if he would have.
It is situations like this that make me wish that there is some form of afterlife, complete with punishments for those that do such evil like torture people who cannot defend themselves and steal their money, for they would have a welcome place in the pits of hell.
This is where using the Bible gives me contradicting ideas. Should I think of them in ways that they have shown how they would like to be treated, or should I think of them in ways that I would like to be treated? Or should I, like everyone who shows outrage over what happened in the US, try to turn the other cheek and forgive them?

RIP Shawn Lonsdale
It's starting to make its rounds now.
I was directed to this from the JREF forum.
Shawn Lonsdale, a critic of the Church of Scientology, was found dead over the weekend.
It's being ruled a suicide.
The St. Petersburg Times had a report on the matter.
I never met him, but it does not mean that I haven't heard of him.
RIP Shawn Lonsdale, your work will not go in vain.

Now I had said something in the JREF forum about his manner of death, but I thought it was something else.
The article above says:
I saw "exhaust" and "hose" and thought he was found in his car.
Except that he wasn't.
There is one thing that bugs me the most about this, why kill yourself in that manner? It seems to be rather complicated instead of killing yourself in the car.
They are waiting for a toxicology report though. I hope that you could still get some fingerprints off the hose but because it is in Florida I doubt that there would be any good ones.
Until they reveal the toxicology report and do a proper investigation (Lonsdale was on the receiving end of death threats) I think that he may have been driven to suicide, and this will go down in the history books as a successful example of "Operation Freakout"-like tactics being used by CoS.
The problem that I can see in such a death is that you need to determine if there was carbon monoxide present in his lungs. He was found at 12:20 pm so if there was foul play and he was murdered then I would most likely assume that they will find CO in his lungs because he might have been asleep.
12:20 was around the time that an odour was detected. If the odour was due to putrefaction then he would have to have died sometime on Thursday at the minimum. If not then the odour would be something in the exhaust fumes.
And now we get to the more interesting bit. If he was found with no CO in his lungs at all then it means that he was already dead. Unless it was an accidental overdose on something (which, given the circumstances seems to be pretty unlikely) then there would be a wound or presence of the drugs, that killed him.
If there are any drugs in his system that induce sleep but he wasn't taking them at all, it would mean that someone killed him and staged a suicide.
Although there is plenty of evidence that supports a motive for CoS to kill him, I don't really know if they did. It would be one of the worst things for them to receive publicity for killing a critic, it would be good for the critics though, but would CoS really kill someone for criticising them?
Strangely the answer based on available evidence suggests that they would. If they would really go ahead with it, I am not so sure.
Shawn's work will not go in vain, people like Anonymous will see to that, and we may also see his name remembered in what could only be called a battle cry.
